New custom docks or modular kit dock systems can enhance safety, increase property value, reduce ongoing maintenance costs, and facilitate modern upgrades, such as boat lifts, taller roofs, and larger capacity slips.
Dock owners should consider replacing an old boat dock when repairs become frequent, structural components are failing, or the dock no longer meets their current needs.
As a general rule, dock replacement is often the more cost-effective long-term solution if the used dock is:
- 20–30 years old
- Built with outdated floats, or decking materials, or
- Showing signs of structural fatigue or failure
Rule of Thumb: the combined cost of buying, repairing/updating, relocating, and installing a used dock should be less than 50-70% of the cost of a new dock of similar layout & design.
